By age

Data source: Ontario HIV Laboratory Cohort

Key points

  • The percent of people with diagnosed HIV living in Ontario who were on antiretroviral treatment (ART) increased over time for all age categories and was generally higher for people of older ages.
  • ART status is documented on viral load (VL) test requisitions by the ordering health care provider and is missing for 17 to 20% of requisitions. Those with missing data were assumed to be on ART if virally suppressed.

Figures

Figure 1 Percent of people with diagnosed HIV living in Ontario who were on ART by age category, 2000 to 2015

Trends: Between 2000 and 2015, the percent of people with diagnosed HIV who were on ART increased across all age categories and was generally higher for people of older ages. In 2015, the percent on ART was 68.2%, 70.1%, 78.1%, 84.1% and 86.3% for those aged 24 or younger, 25 to 34, 35 to 44, 45 to 54, and 55 or older, respectively. See Tables 1 and 2 below for data and definitions.

“on ART” definition
Documented on ART, or ART status missing and virally suppressed, on last viral load test

Table 2 Percent of people with diagnosed HIV living in Ontario who were on ART by age category, 2000 to 2015
Estimate of percent on ART “on ART” definition (numerator) “Diagnosed” definition (denominator)
Main Documented on ART, or ART status missing and virally suppressed, on last viral load test (See Table 1 above for data) Nominal HIV-positive diagnostic test or HIV viral load test, and not administratively lost to follow-up after 2 years (See Table 2 here for data)

Notes: Data provided by Public Health Ontario Laboratories. ART status documented on viral load test requisition by ordering provider and missing for 17-20% of requisitions. Individuals missing information on sex were excluded (approximately 0.4%). Tables and Figures display main estimates only. A range of plausible values, calculated using alternative definitions, are available upon request.
